Residencies

Dorland Mountain Arts Colony
Temecula, California
September 1999, May 2001,
and September 2003

I've had the pleasure of being a resident at Dorland Mountain Arts Colony, near Temecula, California, three times. Dorland was a very rustic artists colony with no electricity, which is a large part of its charm. Unfortunately, Dorland was destroyed by one of the many Southern California wildfires in May of 2004. I worked beautifully here, writing about half of the draft of my novel in 1999, jump-starting a new project there in May of 2001, and editing a documentary video during my 2003 visit. Thankfully, the colony is being rebuilt and should be ready for residents soon.

May/June 2000
Douglas Coupland, Master Artist

In 2000, I was chosen to be one of seven Associate Artists working with novelist Douglas Coupland at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. It's a structured month-long residency, but I still got plenty of work done on the novel. It was Doug's first time leading a writing workshop, but you'd never know it. A good time was had by all. The writers also collaborated formally and informally with the designer associates and the musician associates.
